I love my Kindle reader. My eyes are not great, so it’s a boon to be able to adjust the brightness and size of the text. 

However, I’ve been a reader for more than fifty years. Nothing will ever completely replace the experience of holding a physical copy of a book in my hands. 

A quick side story: In the summer of 1981, I was living in Seattle, Washington. I was twenty-one years old and living a pretty relaxed lifestyle. I was a shade over six feet tall, with a huge mass of curly hair, and I was skinny - I weighed about 145 pounds at the time. I also dressed the way certain people did in the day--that is to say somewhat oddly by today’s standards.

One day, I heard that one of my favorite authors, Frank Herbert, was going to be signing copies of his latest book--God Emperor of Dune--at a nearby Tower Books. Nothing--not even being almost broke--could stop me from heading down and buying a copy to have him sign. When I headed to the store, I was wearing a one-piece jumpsuit with the arms cut off. Did I mention the jumpsuit had about twenty different zippers? Or that I was wearing an odd pair of sunglasses that looked like what Cyclops in The X-men wore? Yeah. Quite a picture. 

I happily waited in line for more than an hour to reach the Great Man. When I did, I could tell he wasn’t all that happy to be sitting there, endlessly signing his name and being told what a Great Writer he was. When it was my turn and I plopped my book down in front of him with a big cheesy grin, he looked up at me and muttered something I won’t repeat, then said, “You look like some creature out of my books.”

I was over the moon to be insulted by the great Frank Herbert and asked if he would inscribe that inside, along with his signature. He did. It instantly became a prized possession.
